The University of Glasgow’s Formula Student Team
Our Formula Student team designs and builds an EV single seat race car and a driverless car to race in IMechE’s annual Formula Student competition at Silverstone. In 2022, the team had its final ever combustion entry and became the first ever Scottish team to bring home the crown. In 2023 and 2024 the team has continued its success across all of the team’s branches.

Our Setup
At UGRacing, we aren’t just a team that builds a car: we are the foremost opportunity at the University of Glasgow for students to gain industry-style experience, and so are directly shaping the engineers of the future. We are proud of our holistic approach and the ambition of our members allowing us to undertake our most ambitious projects to date.
UGRacing is split into 4 separate divisions; Electric Vehicle, Driverless Vehicle, Concept Vehicle and Operations.
Electric Vehicle
2025 will be UGRacing’s third EV entry at FSUK. Utilising the Emrax 208 MV LC motor, Bamocar d3 400/400 motor controller and a custom-made HV accumulator manufactured in-house, we aim to return competitive and willing to challenege once again for the top positions at competition. The team combines the skills from every engineering discipline to create a high performance single seater race car that will compete at FSUK in July 2025.
Driverless Vehicle
The Driverless team writes code for a car which self-drives courses around Silverstone each year. We use industry standard sensors to visualise the tracks and path planning algorithms to navigate, as well as simulation software grounded on Unreal Engine to create our own in house simulator. The Driverless team will compete in static design events and dynamic events at FSUK.
Concept
This year at FSUK 24 UGRacing finished 1st overall in concept class, this is the highest position achieved by the team. UGRacing hopes to build upon this success and keep pushing design boundaries. Each year new recruits within the EV team will compete in concept class to gain the necessary skills for Formula Student class. The concept members will only compete in “design-only” entries and this year they will focus on the continued development of an EV race car with an Autonomous Drive System.Operations
The operations team manage everything going on within the team, from creating partnerships with massive companies from around the globe to creating content and showing off everything happening in UGR to the rest of the world. The operations team is key to organising the logistics of the team, this includes socials and trips to Silverstone, whilst also developing software and IT necessary to keep UGRacing running.
Electric Vehicle
2024 will be UGRacing’s second ever EV entry at FSUK. Utilising the Emrax 208 MV LC motor, Bamocar d3 400/400 motor controller and a custom-made HV accumulator manufactured in-house, we aim to return competitive and willing to challenege once again for the top positions at competition.
Driverless Vehicle
In our 5th year of running a Driverless team, we will continue to refine our bespoke software and focus on real-world testing, as we strive to jump higher in the leaderboards of FS-AI.Concept
We have found great success in previous years by encouraging junior team members take charge of a “design-only” entry to present to judges at competition, giving them the skills needed for future year’s design-for-manufacture. This year, we will be looking to manufacture the team’s first actuation systems and present an EV-ADS concept vehicle at competition.
Operations
The operations team manage everything going on within the team, from creating partnerships with massive companies from around the globe to creating content and showing off everything happening in UGR to the rest of the world.
